Supporting Security Operations During a Critical Transition

About Amnesty International

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 10 million people in over 150 countries and territories who campaign to end abuses of human rights worldwide.

The Requirement

Global Recourse delivered a broad array of operational risk support to Amnesty International over a critical period of transition in our in-house security function. During that time, Annekatrin provided vital continuity of leadership whilst there was a key recruitment gap in security management capability.

Advice and support we sought from Annekatrin specifically included:

Training:

  • Designing and delivering safety and security training
  • Co-authoring an internal training module for staff deployed for family support in crisis.

Standard Operating Procedures:

  • Developing travel and operational security protocol documents to mitigate risks and raise awareness
  • Conducting site security assessments for offices in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Ukraine to enable Amnesty to operate safely, sustainably and securely in these locations.
  • Establishing organisational goals for performance reviews to improve quality of feedback and competency levels, enabling accountability of staff and management.

Incident Management:

  • Embedding use of the critical incident guide, responding to major incidents and the importance of security incident reporting for analytical purposes and organisational learning.

The Results

Annekatrin’s diligence, commitment and professionalism ensured that not only did the organisation maintain appropriate standards of duty of care but continued to improve these further.

Specifically, the work she did on policy and protocol development strengthened existing processes and set the foundation by which they could be applied more effectively across the wider Movement.

With a commitment second-to-none, Annekatrin is utterly reliable, always supportive, and adds real value to organisational development aims.

Annekatrin consistently stands out for her energy, enthusiasm, capacity to join dots and make things happen on behalf of  the people she works with and the wider organisation. She has a strong energy and bias to action, and was instrumental in the work done to inculcate a global culture around Security and Well-being at Amnesty. I would commend her to any organisation who is looking to improve their operations strategically.
